What Are The Average Removal Costs In The UK?

Moving to a new house is a big deal, and there are lots of things you must make sure you remember. They say it’s one of the most stressful things you can do in life. So, if you can take some of the stress out by hiring a removal company, why not?

There may be some things about removal companies that you’re not sure about, such as the cost and additional extras that you can choose. Worry not, we’re here to cover some of the questions you may have about house removal costs in the UK.

Typical House Removal Costs

According to Compare My Move, the typical house removal costs for a 3-bed house travelling 50 miles within the UK are around £1,181. This cost includes professional packing services and the dismantling and reassembling of furniture at your new home.

But bear in mind that the figure can be very different depending on other factors such as the size of your property, the amount of stuff you want to move, whether you want help packing with special items, etc, and the list goes on.

However, there are other moving costs too, which we’ll look at later. Many removal companies charge £1 per cubic foot. This means that if you work out the cubic square footage of your house, you’ll be able to get a somewhat accurate starting price for hiring a removal firm.

Note that this isn’t going to be the final price, and before you go ahead with hiring a removal company, you should have a proper removal survey with a local moving company to get a more accurate price.

The Average Removal Costs Based On Your Property Size

As mentioned earlier, one of the factors determining the cost of moving depends on how much stuff you want to move. If you have a bigger house, you’ll likely have more stuff, so it will cost you more.

The following are the average cost of hiring a removal firm, based on property size. These are only estimated costs, please contact a removal company to get an accurate moving cost with a house removal survey.

1 bedroom house typical removal costs

  • Moving a 1 bedroom house self-pack from £350, or £500 with packing service.

2 bedroom house typical removal costs

  • Moving a 2 bedroom house self-pack from £550, or £780 with packing service.

3 bedroom house typical removal costs

  • Moving a 3 bedroom house self-pack from £750, or £1050 with packing service.

4 bedroom house typical removal costs

  • Moving a 4 bedroom house self-pack from £860, or £1285 with packing service.

5 bedroom house typical removal costs

  • Moving a 5 bedroom house self-pack from £1325, or £1850 with packing service.

Bear in mind that these costs are also based on you moving fairly locally, say within twenty miles of where you live now. If you’re moving further afield then these costs will go up.

Long-Distance Removal Costs

If you’re moving a long distance away from your current property, it’s fair to assume that you will be charged more. This is because it will take more time for the movers to do the moving, as they have to take into account the time they will spend driving.

There are also the fuel costs, and you will usually be charged a certain amount per mile. Usually, this is a typical rate of £1 per mile but can vary depending on where in the country you live. If you’re moving long-distance, the distance becomes the most important factor in working out the cost of your move.

Some companies will charge per hour instead of by mile. So, it’s worth checking out how you’ll be charged before you decide on a removal company.

It’s hard to provide average costs for long-distance removals, as it will depend on a variety of things including where you live now, where you’re moving to, the size of your house, and the number of items you have.

This is why it’s crucial to talk to your chosen removal company to confirm the costs in advance. You don’t want to be lumped with a huge expense after you’ve already moved!

Additional Costs

We mentioned that there are some additional costs involved in hiring a removal company. These include packing and unpacking fees, removal insurance, packing equipment, ease of access, and cleaning.

Let’s look at these individually:

– Packing And Unpacking Fees

If you don’t want to or aren’t able to, some companies offer a packing and unpacking service. This means that the company will come and pack your things up for you and unpack them at the other end.

Obviously, this will cost you extra, as it’s an extra service they’re providing and will take them more time – potentially even a couple of days depending on how much they need to pack.

– Removal Insurance

When moving, it’s worth checking with your home insurance provider to see if you’re covered if something gets lost, stolen, or damaged during the move. If you’re not covered then it’s probably worth looking at removal insurance.

This will cover you the same way your home insurance would except it only covers goods that are in transit. This can become quite expensive, depending on what you want to be covered. Some removal companies don’t even offer this as an option, so definitely check it out before you make a decision.

– Packing Equipment

When we say packing equipment, we mean things like boxes, labels, packing paper, and tape (amongst other things). Sometimes, sourcing the boxes and packing paper can be more of a hassle than the move itself.

Some removal companies will offer to provide everything you need to move house, and usually will come and do an evaluation to see how much you’re likely to need.

– Ease of Access

How easy your house is to access will also affect the cost of moving. This goes for either the house you live in now or the house you’re moving to. If your house is particularly hard to get to, and especially if it’s hard to move things in and out of, it will likely take the movers more time. And more time equals more cost.

– Cleaning Service

Some removal firms will offer you the option of cleaning your old house once everything has been moved out. This is often a good choice for those who have rented and need to leave the place in a good condition. However, if you want to save some money you can always opt to do this yourself.

– Storage Solutions

The home moving process can be stressful and complicated, having a storage unit can be a lifesaver. Using the storage facility will give you space to store the items that you want to keep but don’t currently need until you move to your new home. Talk to your removal company to find out the cost of the storage you require.

Tips For Movers

Finally, should you tip your movers? Some people do, and some people don’t. What it really comes down to is your personal choice. There is no obligation to do so, and most movers will not expect a tip. However, this doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be gratefully received!

In conclusion, moving to a new house can be an expensive and stressful time, but hopefully learning more about the way costs are worked out will help to ease some of your worries. Make sure to do your research beforehand, and ask about additional costs and services that you might be interested in.
