A Tudor House in Southampton

Tudor House and Garden

Although known as a Tudor house, the earliest part of the site was a Norman domestic dwelling, built in the 1180s.

It has a colourful past. At one time it stood amongst the poorest area in Southampton and was to be condemned.

Local philanthropist William Spranger bought the house, recognising its significance as a site of historic importance.

For twelve years he led a campaign to turn the house into a museum. Eventually, he was successful, and the house opened as a museum on 31 July 1912.

Today Tudor House is still a popular attraction offering a unique and atmospheric insight into the lives and times of both its residents through the years and of Southampton itself.

Southampton City Art Gallery

The gallery is located in Southampton’s Civic Centre and surprisingly, it is free to enter.

Opened in 1939, its art collection covers six centuries of European art history, with over 5,300 works in its fine art collection.

It is housed in an example of 1930s municipal architecture. The gallery holds a Designated Collection, considered of national importance.

Incredibly popular, thousands of visitors explore the exhibitions and displays every month.

Regularly rotating displays feature works from the collection, national touring exhibitions and work by local artists.

Plus, through a programme of educational activities, Southampton City Art Gallery provides opportunities for greater access, involvement and understanding of art for people of all ages.

This is one attraction in Southampton that is not to be missed.
