The Man and a van versus the removals company
The Man and a Van versus the Removals Company
Your property has finally sold, your offer has been accepted on the house of your dreams and your solicitor has everything lined up for a speedy exchange and completion. Now all you have to do is find the best removals company to arrange your move.
Now, when it comes to finding someone to help you, should you choose a removals company or a man with a van?
Both the removals company and the much smaller man and a van are designed to help you move to your new home. One of the main differences between the two is size. The removals company will normally be much larger, often with branches across the country. They will usually have more staff and bigger and newer lorries.
It is also worth remembering that they are not always the more expensive option as the job is often completed much faster. They can also offer extra services such as packing and storage. Their staff will be experienced, trained and qualified to deal with any special items you may need to move, such as your precious antiques, paintings or the grand piano. You would be well advised to look for a removals company who are members of the British Association of Removers (BAR). All members must confirm to a high standard of conduct and will be experienced in all aspects of moving.
The man and a van option will be run on a much smaller scale. They usually have only one van, which is much smaller than the average removals vehicle, so many trips may be required to move everything. It is also worth checking how many men will be available; usually it is only one. This is fine for smaller moves but may not work if you need to move large pieces of furniture, unless of course, you are happy to help. Remember, it will normally take a lot longer if you choose this route.
If you are unsure as to which option best suits your needs, take a little time to consider the following questions:
- Do you have possessions such as antiques or precious personal items? A removals company will be specially trained to carefully pack and move such things. They will also usually be insured against any damage to your things or property. If they are BAR registered this is an added reassurance that everything will be carried out by trained staff in a professional manner.
- Will you require a storage option? Maybe you need to carry out decorating or building work on your new home and would like to store all non-essentials until the work is finished. A man and a van are unlikely to be able to offer a clean and safe storage facility.
- How far are you moving? If it is long distance, to Europe or internationally, it may be best to have the move carried out by a bigger company who will have local knowledge, experience of export packing, container loading, export documentations and many other necessary procedures to get you safely to your new home.
The choice is yours, but it might be worth reflecting on how a bad moving day can be one of the most stressful things we ever experience!
